I woke at 5:45 to – yep, you guessed it! - MORE snow and it was still coming down. There was at least two inches of new snow on the deck rail. When I checked again at 7:30 we had sleety rain hitting the window. I was e’g with a customer this morning. She is in Germany (military) and when I told her my “snow tale of woe” she wrote: So, you gonna stuff some fruitcake in the mouth of the next fool you catch singing White Christmas, or what???? That gave me a good chuckle.
I was unsuccessful at downloading a Christmas movie to watch last night. I did, however, run a complete scan on my computer and, much to my amazement, discovered 75 “infiltrations” which my antivirus quarantined and deleted. Most of that had to do with SpyWareBot that I had on the computer at one time and some Web Search that went along with it. So now all that stuff is gone.
At 8:20 this morning it was snowing again and a breaking news story came on TV. As if there weren’t enough problems already at Sea-Tac airport with thousands of stranded travelers, some de-icer managed to get INSIDE an airplane and numerous people were requiring treatment. What next? What next was that Nadine called to check in. She’s still knitting away on the Jayne hat. After I got off the phone with her I fixed some Pigs a la blankette. That was the end of the pigs. In fact, I had to use some hot dog in some of them.
The snow finally seemed to stop by eleven o’clock. Barbara wrote: Really worked yesterday at getting out but snow is too deep around the car so I got stuck. It took about an hour to clear the car of snow so I was too pooped to then clear the driveway in front of the car. I called her around 12:30 and she was hoping to give it a try again in a couple of hours. She had just gotten off the phone with Craig on his Mexican vacation when I called.
Meantime, I got a call from Ellie. They had been out of power since five this morning. It came back on for a bit and then a transformer blew and that was that until it can be fixed. At least they have a generator so George was off getting gasoline for that and she and Susie were trying to keep warm.
Bill went out to the garage about 12:45 to put the chains on. At 1:15 he was still in there and I hadn’t heard a peep out of him. I looked out my dining room window and the sky looked very dark and ominous. Not a good sign….. At 1:25 the back end of the car emerged from the garage and snow began falling in earnest…..again! At 1:29 he was off. I yelled out and asked if he was having fun. Judging from his response I’m guessing the answer was “No.” He got out of the driveway but the ultimate test will be whether or not he can get back to the garage since the driveway is on an uphill slant.
At this point I had finished the body of the Lillie baby sweater so I got to work on the first sleeve. I decided to try doing it on two small circular needles instead of four double points. I was reading about that somewhere just the other day. Now that I’m used to the double points this seems somewhat awkward but we’ll see how it goes.
The sleet was really coming down as 2:30 approached. Bill had been gone for an hour and no word from him. I hesitated to call him as I didn’t want him trying to answer the phone if he is driving. I stayed off the phone in case he tried to call me. One good thing to come out of all this snow time is that I finally got my email cleaned out. It was in serious need of purging so I’m glad that’s done. By time I got to the fourth row with the two needles I had managed to get all the stitches on one of the 11 inch circular needles. Even though I was only working with 37 stitches it had enough give that I could knit with just one needle.
As I knit and watched the weather outside, I couldn’t imagine Bill be agreeable to going back out into it tonight. Driving in these conditions in the daylight is one thing; in the dark is a different ballgame! I wish I could play “Silent Night” on the angel bear, or watch Clint’s DVD but I know either one would just rip my heart out at the moment.
Long about three o’clock I closed the computer and went to sit in Clint’s recliner. I had no more than gotten comfy when the phone rang. It was Bill and he was stuck at the corner where the county road goes uphill. The chains broke and were useless. A vehicle coming downhill sideways almost slid into him. He told me to call a tow truck. I called Chris, the guy who came up with his truck yesterday, and told him what was going on. He said he had someone else to pull out and would be along soon. Meantime I called AAA who had no one in the area and considered our area too slippery. She suggested we get it the car off the road as far as possible and call them in the morning. Otherwise I could try to find a tow truck on my own and they would reimburse us. I called the six tow truck services in our area. I only found two who would even consider coming and it would be two hours or more before they could get here.
Meantime Chris and John, another neighbor, arrived on the scene. John was able to hook his chains underneath our car and pull Bill to the bottom of our driveway. Bill made it half way up before he could go no further. I bundled up and hiked down to help him bring in the mail, groceries, etc. Turns out that our next door neighbor’s car was also stuck at the stop sign coming down the hill there on the same corner. But she was out there digging snow from around the tires of our car. The other scary thing that happened was when Bill was driving along the highway and a huge chunk of ice fell out of a tree and landed in the middle of the windshield. That scared him half to death thinking it would come right through the windshield. So much for dinner out on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Well, enough of this day! I have an Agatha Christie movie I can watch tonight unless there is something on TV worth watching. Bill brought in turkey legs and rabbit from the freezer so that will be Christmas Day dinner. Nothing quite so fancy for dinner tonight. In case you need some entertainment, here are a couple of Christmas puzzles you can solve. I’ll include the answers tomorrow. And following the puzzles is a song we’ve been singing at church through the Christmas Season called “How Many Kings?” It has some thought provoking questions on this eve of our Savior’s birth.
