Oops!

We had a long talk with Beth last night since today is the first anniversary of Cousin Jessie’s homegoing.  I told Beth it was interesting that Jessie went “home” a week after Clint as far as the day is concerned.
I got a call from a customer this morning just after eight.  I was awake but hadn’t talked myself out of bed just yet.  When I was done with her I got up, took care of some business odds and ends and headed off to Bible study.  This is the last one for this group until January 7.
Bill called just after we were done and asked if I was coming home before my chiropractor appointment.  I said I would so I could grab a bite to eat, and he wanted to ride into Key Center since he had something to mail to Reign.  I got held up on the way out the door so I called and asked him to make me a turkey sandwich.  When I turned onto our road I called and told him to put it in the toaster and that way I was able to walk in the door, eat, and head off to see Dr. Dave.
When I got there, however, I was informed my appointment was yesterday.  Oops!  I can’t believe I came home and wrote Wed 1 p.m. on two calendars when that wasn’t correct.  I rescheduled for next Tuesday at one.  Thank goodness I wasn’t in major, major need of his services today.  I thought she said he told someone to call me, in which case, I would have dashed right over, but no one called.  Oh well…
I left there to track down Bill.  I had the cell phone so I couldn’t call him from their office.  I saw the car at the grocery store and as I crossed the deli parking lot I saw someone approaching on my right and it was Barbara.  She mentioned again that Bill says we have magnets – always running into each out like that.  She was going into the deli to pick up salad for the potluck tonight.
I found Bill and told him what happened.  He was just checking out so when he was done we hit the road for home where I finished knitting another hat for tonight’s “community giving.”  Linda’s #1 and #3 boxes arrived today so I called to be sure that it was #1 I was supposed to open with the camera in it.  Before I could do anything I had to charge the battery so I plugged that in figuring it would be done by time I got home tonight.
Barbara was expecting me at 5:45 and I got there at 5:47.  We arrived at Knit Guild by 6:15 and I think I counted 18 gals present and all kinds of yummy food for the potluck.  Diane from Caring for Kids joined us tonight.  After Gladys introduced her we dove into the food.  When everyone was mostly done eating, Diane spoke for a bit.  They will put on the Christmas party this coming Saturday.  That’s when the kids get the hats we’ve been working on all year.  After she was done they did the gift exchange.  Interestingly I got Barbara’s gift – a bar of lavender scented knitter’s soap which you can see a picture of HERE.  I was very happy to get that.  When Clint was on hospice the massage therapist came on Friday’s to give him a massage and she used lavender lotion so I it is a scent I can smell and think of Clint.
I dropped Barbara off and arrived home about 9:30.  I’m going to work on the mailing list for this year’s Angel Card Project.  Hopefully I can remember how I merged all the addresses for Madrona and printed them out at once instead of one at a time.  If I get that done maybe I can play with the new camera a little before I go to bed.
Meantime, I’m sharing a poem that Mary sent me.  I hope it will remind you to pray for our soldiers who will be away from home and their families this Christmas.

A Different Christmas Poem

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.
Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.

The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.
My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep .
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know, Then the
sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.
My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.

Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.
A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"
For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..

To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."
"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.

No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at 'Pearl on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of 'Nam',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.

I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.
I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.

I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."

"So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."
"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
"Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.
For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."
