I started the day at seven, having waked from a dream where I was in New York City in a hotel. I was on a top floor with big picture glass windows. I looked out in time to see a ball of fire which turned out to be a small plane plummeting to the ground about a block away! Hmmm…
Bill dropped me off at Nadine’s while he took the car in to have the brakes checked. She is not a coffee drinker but she purchased a small coffee maker and had coffee waiting for me when I arrived. What service! Our first order of the day was to ready all our stuff for the class next Tuesday.
That didn’t take too long, so I helped her with some computer stuff. She has email that hasn’t been coming through so after a phone call to her server to get her password working, we logged onto the email directly and tackled the “junk” mail box and reset the spam preferences. We didn’t find the one particular email she was looking for, but we solved part of her problem.
After that we had lunch and then she brought me home. Bill met us at the door to tell me the house had been broken into during the four hours we were gone. You aren't going to believe this! They stole the knitting machine I had in its case under the bed. I can guarantee you they had no idea what they were stealing! I would love to have been there when they opened the case.
Distressed as I am at being violated in this manner, I praise the Lord they did not take my computers or other seemingly very obvious "goodies." At first we couldn’t figure out how they got in but finally realized that despite the stick in the sliding glass door, they were able to push that door open enough to get in and then they left by the front door. I know the front door was locked when we left because I got back out of the car to check it this morning.
It seems they headed straight for the bedroom and that is where they ransacked figuring, I suppose, that is where people hide stuff. They did take a jewelry box my Dad brought me from Okinawa. Surprise again! That's not where I keep my jewelry! We don’t know if Bill interrupted them before they got all they intended to, or what. He saw no one on the road when he came in. They also took a couple of Bill’s knives and some ammo.
It took over 2 1/2 hours for the sheriff to show up. I guess if you don't have the burglar on the floor with a gun pointed to his head the law takes its sweet time arriving. Needless to say, we can’t help worrying that they’ll come back now that they know what is in the house! When Bill called the neighbor, he learned that the new house around the corner and up the hill has already been robbed twice and they’ve only been in there a couple of months! The sheriff’s deputy said they had an incident not far from here where the burglar(s) walked into an elderly lady’s house. It was broad daylight, as it was here, although she had a door open.
And then Nadine told me to read the latest Key Peninsula News and I learned there has been a rash of burglaries and attempted burglaries at several local businesses! The druggies must be having a hard time getting money for their fixes.
Well, I’ve had enough of this day, thank you very much, and it is only 6:20. So I’m outta here for tonight.
