The first full week of the New Year is winding down. It was foggy this morning so I thought this afternoon would be sunny. We had a little sun but not all that much. Bill asked me to type up his story of the ambush of his recon platoon in Vietnam in 1968. Presumably it will appear on the 12th Cavalry Regiment website. We started at 10:45 this morning and finished up a little around 2:30.
We took a break when Deanna called to check in. She was worried about her son-in-law Raleigh who has cancer. I thought his last test came back ok but he is having some problems. He had an ear infection recently and now he is having extreme weakness in his arms and other body parts. His wife was going to take him to the doctor this afternoon and didn’t know how she was going to even get him into the car. He didn’t want her to call anyone for help. Deanna hoped their 15 year old son would be able to help since he is a good, strong boy.
Another of her relatives is probably in her last week or so of life. She is in the hospital at the moment but the hospital is trying to get her out of there. You can’t stay in the hospital for very long these days. And her daughter is there every day creating all kinds of problems. In fact, they attribute Roberta’s high blood pressure spikes to the ruckus created by her daughter. Isn’t it sad the woman can’t die in peace? She doesn’t have anyone at home for 24 hour care so her only options are a nursing home or the hospice center. She doesn’t want to go to the hospice center but I don’t think you can get into a nursing home at the drop of a hat.
We took another break after noon when Nadine stopped by for a bit. I was finally able to give her the Christmas present that has been sitting here since before Christmas. I also gave her something for her daughter Joyce, the one who baked all those cookies. Her g’daughter Catherine and her husband leave for home tomorrow after their ten day visit. They’ve been out running around all over the place with Joyce (and Ted?) despite the weather. Nadine hasn’t gone with them most of the time because she just isn’t up to all that.
One thing I discussed with both Deanna and Nadine is the upcoming Sew Expo. We’ll be going on Friday, February 27. I signed up for several seminars – You Can Quilt with an Embroidery Machine, Teach Your Embroidery Machine to Piece & Quilt, The Quilt as You Go Advantage, and Fearless Beginnings to Free Motion Quilting. We’re also going to stay Friday night for Friday Night Live “Kick It up a Stitch” with Nancy Zieman & Mary Mulari. That is supposed to be an extra-special evening chock full of sewing ideas, tips and projects. Also saucy alternatives to basic patterns like sweatshirts, bags, aprons, jackets and quilts. Sounds like fun! My first class is at 9:30 so it will be a long day.
While Bill was gone this afternoon I checked in on Debi. She says her back is feeling better but since she is still taking the drugs it is probably hard to know for sure. Joel was out with his mother when I called. She and Joel have been married for about 30 years and no matter what she does with the MIL, she is never right. Too bad that is so often the case.
I cooked biongu (my Italian chicken and pasta dish) for dinner tonight. That made Bill happy and it WAS very tasty. As I told Bill, “I don’t cook often but when I do, I’m GOOD.” He agreed.
The wavy scarf is up to 32 inches now. I was happy to find out that Barbara is out of her “blue funk” and is happily knitting again. And no, I still haven’t added a book to the inventory software. Pitiful….. Wanda was off to her g’daughter’s birthday party tonight. Her birthday isn’t until later in the month but she wanted a party before she goes back to school in North Carolina.
I’m ready to go sit in a comfortable chair. I’ve had more than enough computer today!
