I woke at five but fought the urge to get up and turn on the heat. I woke again at seven, went into the living room and bent over to turn on the heat. As I stood up I glanced out the front door window and saw that something was going on next door. I saw a blinking red light and realized that what I thought was fog was smoke! It was still dark enough that I couldn’t make out what might be ablaze. I went back and told Bill something was on fire next door but he was half asleep and didn’t get up. As it got lighter out and the smoke cleared a little, I realized I could see the frame of their garage so I went back again and told Bill it looked like their garage burned down. That got him out bed lickety split.
Sometime during all this I recalled hearing sirens when I woke at five. I heard them but never dreamed they were right next door! Of course, our houses are on opposite ends of five acres so it isn’t like someone in town having a fire at the next door neighbor’s house. We got the garbage and recycle ready to go out. Bill bundled up since it was only 25° out and off he went. He returned at 8:45 with news. The garage was a total loss along with two cars. As best the fire chief could tell it was an electrical fire which started around four o’clock. Dave does (or maybe did, since he is not well) woodworking and had tools and lots flammable materials in there. Or it might have been something involving the electrical box.
Bethann was at work in Seattle and Dave and the kids – Caitlin, Dustin and one other young man – were there. The neighbor up the hill (the one with the pit bulls) saw the fire, called it in and came down, woke them up and got everyone out of the house in case it became involved in the fire. Bethann was called and was home by time Bill went over there. Apparently the fire truck(s) were all the way across the peninsula at another electrical fire. Dave, who has breathing problems and uses oxygen, was having a terrible time when the smoke was the worst. Bill said that even out on our road coming back to our house there were some huge embers from the fire. Scary! So now Bill plans to call Delta Electric to check out our electrical box in the garage since it is probably 37 years old. He also took a bunch of paper out of the garage and put it in the recycle bin.
NEWS FLASH: At three o’clock this afternoon Beth called to say they were leaving for Seattle. We’ll meet them around eight tonight and hope and pray the lung transplant is a “go” this time. Keep us all in your thoughts and prayers. I’ll write as I’m able.
